Shirley “Shirl” Jean Smith was born on July 17,1945, in Chicago Illinois to Norma (Landers) and Earl Thomas. Shirl passed on in the early morning hours of March 23 rd , 2024. She was peacefully listening to Elvis sing the gospel with her children at her home in Greer, South Carolina. Shirl joined her parents Norma Landers and Earl Thomas, her husband Joe C Smith, her sisters Patricia Conn and Ellanore Harding (William), her grandparents Ray and Ella Nelson, her uncles Wayne and Ray Nelson, step daughter Wendy Mortimore, stepson Steve Smith, and grandson Jacob Mortimore at the party in heaven.

Shirl loved to bingo and dote on her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind her brother James Landers, sister Linda Greckoff, her daughters Rhonda Stuart (Tim) of Meridian Mississippi and Melissa Canfield of Indianapolis, Indiana her son Scott Edgar (Chris) of Greer, South Carolina, and step-daughter Mendy Ferguson of Crawfordsville, Indiana. She had eight Grandsons Jeff Stuart (Courtney), Ryan Edgar (Coryn), Jaden Canfield (Maeson), Jesse Edgar, Shane Delong, Blake Mortimore, and Trey Mortimore and granddaughters Haley Canfield and Shalea Delong. Shirl had several great-grandchildren. In her final years, Shirl felt much joy and companionship serving as Jace Edgar’s GiGi and traveling with Chris and Jace on road trips. She will be dearly missed.

Shirl’s celebration of life services will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Calumet Park Funeral Chapel in Merrillville, Indiana on Thursday, March 28 th . In leu of flowers, the family asks that for those that feel led to contribute to donate to St Jude’s Children’s Cancer Foundation. Shirl supported St. Jude’s for many years and would like knowing she inspired others to contribute to their cause.
