De’Andre’ Cleveland Mateen, 32, departed from this life, unexpectedly but peacefully, on March 30, 2024 in Gary In. De’Andre’ was preceded in death by his grandfather, Cleveland Smith Jr, his grandmother, Rosie Lee Smith, and aunt, Javonne Smith Lenoir.
De’Andre’, born in Gary, In on April 20, 1991, was the son of Fred Mateen and Sylvia Brantley. De’Andre’ moved to Minnesota with his immediate family as a young child. He was raised in both Minnesota and Gary, attended school in both places, allowing him to meet a lot people and make lifelong friends.
De’Andre’ loved to read, worked very hard, was always eager to help, and loved spending time with his family.
To know him was to absolutely love him. He had a hearty laugh and a smile that could light up a room. He was such a loving and caring person. He had so much compassion and was very protective of his family.
De’Andre’ was always there to offer guidance and would support in whatever way he could. He was a very passionate person and if you were ever on the receiving end of a disagreement with him, you understood just how truly passionate he was. De’Andre’ was always enthusiastic to talk, share stories, and spread knowledge. He was never afraid to speak his mind.
De’Andre’ is survived by his parents, Fred Mateen and Sylvia (Marvin) Brantley, siblings, David (Ariana W.) Brantley, Bonita Mateen, DaJuan Jackson, Breonca Mateen, and Patrice Brantley, grandparents, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
