John L. Oros, of Hobart, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at the age of 94. He was born to Gabor and Irma Orosz in a small town in Pennsylvania, and made northwest Indiana his home. He worked as a millwright throughout the region for more than 50 years before his retirement as well as owning and operating Mr. Johnny’s Restaurant and working as the harbormaster at the Fontana Lake Marina, both in North Carolina.
John was highly skilled with his hands, not only as a millwright, but also in carpentry. He built all of his own homes as well as his restaurant, a feat in which he was infinitely proud of. He was a dedicated member of St. Joan of Arc Church in Merrillville for 30 years before their closing in 2022.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and 2 dear sons: John and Danny Joe.
He is survived by his most beloved wife of 72 years, Betty; his son: Michael (Lilly) Oros, and daughter: Irma Jean (late Edward) Sell; treasured grandchildren: Christopher and John Oros, and Jessica Sitton; 8 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren; and his best buddy, Minnie Mouse the dog.
Friends and family are invited to visit on Thursday, April 18, 2024, from 10 AM until the time of service at 1:00 at Calumet Park Funeral Chapel (7535 Taft Street, Merrillville). Interment to follow at Calumet Park Cemetery. For additional information, call 219-736-5840.
