Our beloved Elizabeth “Beth” Downing passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on September 4, 2024. Elizabeth was born on September 17, 1951, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to Robert and Mary Lou (née Tislow) Barcus.

A Requiem Liturgy will take place at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church, located at 557 West 57th Ave, Merrillville, Indiana 46410, with Fr. Michal Bucko officiating, on Wednesday, September 11th, at 11:00 AM. Following the Liturgy, a burial service will be conducted at Calumet Park Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Rendina Funeral Home, located at 5100 Cleveland St., Gary, Indiana 46408.

Beth was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Lou Barcus; her sister Rebecca “Becky” Barcus; and her dear cousin, Patrick Hudson. She is survived by her husband, Bill, and their three beloved daughters: Angelique “Angie” (David) Haas, Christine Buzcek, and Mary Kate (Vince) Sosnowski. As a grandmother to six adored grandchildren—Emma, Zoey, Declan, Dominic “Duke”, Abigail “Abby” and Hudson—Beth’s heart overflowed with love. She cherished every moment spent with them, attending their school and sporting events, sharing stories, and creating treasured memories that will last a lifetime.

Beth earned a Bachelor of Science degree at Indiana University Northwest. She was a proud, dedicated homeschool educator to her three daughters. Beth was a devout Catholic and had a special devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and The Rosary.  She enjoyed reading, sewing, canvas and ceramic painting, a multitude of crafts and exploring new activities with her grandchildren.  Beth especially loved spending time fishing and relaxing with her family and friends at the “Fish House.”  She delighted in cooking and baking family recipes, most certainly the mini pecan pies she made for her father every Christmas.

Beth’s warmth, kindness, and loving spirit will be profoundly missed but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
