2025

Alice was the person who always had a smile for everyone and was always happy to see you.

Alice Esther Jagiela (nee Monreal) age 88, passed away peacefully on Saturday March 8, 2025 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. Alice was born on August 22, 1936 while in route to West Side Hospital in Calumet City, IL. She continued to arrive at any function early from that day on.

She met her husband Walter while working at the Country Kitchen in Gary. They were married on September 4, 1954 at Blessed Sacrament Church by Reverend Louis Madejczek. They lived in the Glen Park section of Gary, IN and later moved to Merrillville, IN.

Alice held various jobs throughout the years at Artistic Cleaners, Ace Hardware, and together with her husband she owned Wally’s Washerette on Route 30 in Merrillville.

Alice was the person who always had a smile for everyone and was always happy to see you. She loved motorcycle riding, jumping off the diving board into a pool, (both while she was still in her 80’s!) and spending time with her family at the campgrounds.

She is survived by her children: Walter (Cindy), Stanley, Lawrence, Joyce, and Annette, twenty grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and 1 Great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Walter, her son Anthony, her parents, Anthony and Anna Marie Monreal, her brother Anthony and sister Mary DeBie.
